ऐतिहासिक रूप से, इस मंदिर को 13वीं-14वीं शताब्दी में दिल्ली सल्तनत द्वारा नष्ट कर दिया गया था। 16वीं शताब्दी में मराठा शासक शिवाजी के दादा, मोलोजी भोसले ने इसका पुनर्निर्माण किया, और 18वीं शताब्दी में रानी अहिल्याबाई होल्कर के सहयोग से इसे फिर से स्थापित किया गया।
