नवरात्रि के चौथे दिन की पूजा माँ कूष्माण्डा को समर्पित है। इन्हें ब्रह्माण्ड की सृष्टि करने वाली देवी माना जाता है। अपनी मुस्कान मात्र से ब्रह्माण्ड की रचना करने के कारण इन्हें कूष्माण्डा कहा जाता है।
कूष्माण्डा नाम तीन शब्दों से बना है –
कु (थोड़ा),
उष्मा (ऊर्जा),
अंड (ब्रह्माण्ड)।
जब सृष्टि अंधकारमय थी, तब माँ कूष्माण्डा ने अपनी दिव्य मुस्कान से प्रथम प्रकाश उत्पन्न किया और ब्रह्माण्ड की रचना की।
माँ के आठ भुजाएँ हैं जिनमें शस्त्र, जपमाला, अमृत और फल हैं। वे सिंह पर सवार रहती हैं, जो साहस और शक्ति का प्रतीक है।
माँ कूष्माण्डा की उपासना से आरोग्य, आयु और ऊर्जा प्राप्त होती है।
वे भक्तों को धन, वैभव और सुख प्रदान करती हैं।

इस दिन माँ को कद्दू (कूष्माण्ड), मालपुआ और सफेद फूल अर्पित किए जाते हैं।
