परिचय
नवरात्रि के सातवें दिन की पूजा माँ कालरात्रि को समर्पित है। उनका नाम ‘काल’ (मृत्यु/समय) और ‘रात्रि’ (अंधकार) से मिलकर बना है। वे सबसे उग्र रूप में होते हुए भी भक्तों की रक्षा करने वाली और अत्यंत शुभ फल देने वाली देवी मानी जाती हैं।
कथा
माँ कालरात्रि का प्राकट्य असुरों शुम्भ-निशुम्भ और भयंकर राक्षस रक्तबीज का वध करने के लिए हुआ था। रक्तबीज की प्रत्येक बूंद से नया राक्षस उत्पन्न हो जाता था, लेकिन माँ कालरात्रि ने अपने उग्र रूप से उसका संहार किया।
उनका रूप अत्यंत भयानक है – कृष्णवर्णी, खुले बिखरे केश, और चमकती तीन नेत्र। वे गधे पर सवार रहती हैं और उनके चार हाथ हैं – दो वरद और अभय मुद्रा में तथा दो में तलवार और लोहे का कांटा।
