नवरात्रि के आठवें दिन (अष्टमी) की पूजा माँ महागौरी को समर्पित है। महागौरी नाम का अर्थ है – “अत्यंत गौर वर्ण वाली”। वे पवित्रता, शांति और करुणा की देवी हैं। उनकी पूजा से सुख-समृद्धि और शांति प्राप्त होती है।
कथा के अनुसार, माँ पार्वती ने भगवान शिव को पति रूप में पाने के लिए कठोर तपस्या की। तपस्या के कारण उनका शरीर काला पड़ गया। जब भगवान शिव ने उन्हें स्वीकार किया, तब उन्होंने गंगा जल से माँ को स्नान कराया, जिससे उनका रूप अति सुंदर और गौरवर्णी हो गया। उसी रूप में वे महागौरी कहलायीं।
वे सफेद वस्त्र धारण करती हैं, सफेद बैल (नंदी) पर सवार रहती हैं। उनके हाथों में त्रिशूल और डमरू है तथा अन्य हाथ वरमुद्रा और अभय मुद्रा में हैं।
