काशी (वाराणसी) में एक पवित्र ब्राह्मण दंपत्ति विष्णुदत्त और उनकी पत्नी रहते थे। वर्षों की तपस्या और प्रार्थना के बाद उन्हें एक पुत्र की प्राप्ति हुई, जिसका नाम उन्होंने गृहपति रखा।
गृहपति बचपन से ही भगवान शिव के प्रति गहरी श्रद्धा रखता था। वह जप करता, ध्यान लगाता, और शिवलिंग पर जल चढ़ाता। उसके पिता ने उसकी भक्ति देखकर शिव मंदिरों की यात्रा कराने का निश्चय किया।
एक तीर्थ यात्रा के दौरान वे एक ऐसे नगर पहुंचे जहां के कुछ अहंकारी पुरोहितों ने बालक गृहपति की भक्ति पर प्रश्न उठाया। उन्हें लगा कि एक बच्चा इतनी भक्ति कैसे कर सकता है।
उन्होंने परीक्षा लेने के नाम पर गृहपति को जलती हुई अग्नि की वेदी में बैठने को कहा। बोले:
“अगर शिव सच्चे हैं और तेरी भक्ति भी सच्ची है, तो वे तुझे बचा लेंगे।”
गृहपति निर्भय होकर अग्नि में चला गया, शिव का नाम जपता रहा।
तभी एक तेज प्रकाश प्रकट हुआ – और भगवान शिव स्वयं अग्नि से प्रकट हुए, गृहपति को गोद में उठाया और कहा:
“यह बालक मुझे प्राणों से भी प्रिय है। इसकी भक्ति सच्ची है, और इससे कोई क्षति नहीं हो सकती।”
भगवान ने उसे आशीर्वाद दिया और कहा कि वह अजर-अमर और पूजनीय रहेगा।
गृहपति 63 नायनार संतों में से एक बन गया।
