तमिल शिव भक्ति परंपरा के 63 नयनारों में से कन्नप्पा नयनार को विशेष स्थान प्राप्त है। वह एक शिकारी थे, लेकिन उनकी भक्ति इतनी गहरी थी कि उन्होंने भगवान शिव के लिए अपनी आंखें तक अर्पित कर दीं।

कन्नप्पा का असली नाम थिन्नन था। वह एक वनवासी शिकारी परिवार में जन्मे थे। एक दिन शिकार करते हुए उन्होंने जंगल में एक शिवलिंग देखा। उनका मन भगवान शिव के प्रति प्रेम से भर गया।
उनके पास पूजा करने का कोई शास्त्रीय ज्ञान नहीं था, लेकिन उन्होंने जो कुछ था – मांस, पानी (जो मुंह से डाला गया), और फूल (जो बालों में से निकाले गए) – वह भोलेनाथ को अर्पित किया।
एक दिन शिवलिंग की एक आंख से रक्त बहने लगा। एक ब्राह्मण पुजारी यह देखकर चिंतित हो गया। तभी थिन्नन आया और जब उसने देखा कि शिवलिंग से खून बह रहा है, तो वह दुखी हो गया।
वह बिना सोचे-समझे अपनी एक आंख निकालकर शिवलिंग पर चढ़ा दी।
तब शिवलिंग की दूसरी आंख से भी रक्त निकलने लगा। थिन्नन ने अपनी दूसरी आंख भी देने का निश्चय किया। परंतु अंधे होने पर सही स्थान का अनुमान लगाने के लिए उसने शिवलिंग पर अपना पांव रखा और आंख निकालने लगा।
तभी भगवान शिव स्वयं प्रकट हुए, उन्हें रोका और कहा,
“तू मेरा सच्चा भक्त है।”
भगवान शिव ने उसे आशीर्वाद दिया और उसे "कन्नप्पा नयनार" की उपाधि दी।
