परिचय:
भगवान शिव के अनेकों भक्तों में से मार्कण्डेय ऋषि की कथा अद्वितीय है। जो बालक 16 वर्ष में मृत्यु को प्राप्त होने वाला था, उसने अपनी दृढ़ भक्ति से मृत्यु को भी पराजित कर अमरता प्राप्त की।
कहानी:
ऋषि मृकंडु और उनकी पत्नी मरुदमति संतानहीन थे। उन्होंने भगवान शिव से प्रार्थना की। शिवजी ने उन्हें दो विकल्प दिए – एक ज्ञानी लेकिन अल्पायु पुत्र या अज्ञानी लेकिन दीर्घायु। उन्होंने ज्ञानी पुत्र चुना। मार्कण्डेय का जन्म हुआ।
बालक मार्कण्डेय शुरू से ही भगवान शिव का परम भक्त था। जब उसका 16वां जन्मदिन आया, वह शिवलिंग की पूजा में लीन हो गया।
जब यमराज उसे लेने आए, मार्कण्डेय शिवलिंग से लिपट गया। यमराज ने जब अपना पाश फेंका, वह शिवलिंग पर भी पड़ गया। तभी भगवान शिव शिवलिंग से प्रकट हुए, क्रोधित होकर यमराज को त्रिशूल से मार दिया और मार्कण्डेय को अमरत्व प्रदान किया।
